Tips for Winter Kayaking
By John Thomson III, Atlantic Outfitters
With the approach of winter many kayaker’s mistakenly put their kayaks away for the winter. The reality is you can safely kayak year round with the proper preparations and clothing. Though it is not for everyone, winter kayaking is a wonderful experience. During the fall and winter months the water around Long Island are full of migratory ducks, geese, and seals which can only be seen from a boat or kayak. Seals frequently visit the waters of Western Long Island Sound. Last winter seals were reported as far west as Kings Point and could be seen off of Half Moon Beach. On a windless or light wind day these areas make for a great paddle. Before you go out there are a couple of things you should do to prepare yourself:
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. This is the most important thing you should do when paddling in winter.
- Paddle with a buddy. Unless you are staying in shallow water where people can see you, you should not go out alone.
- Check the weather. Make sure to note wind speed and direction throughout the day. Wind wise, early morning is the best time to go out. Great websites for weather information are www.wunderground.com and www.noaa.org has one of the best marine forecasts.
- Over-dress. Wear more than what you think you need, it is easier to cool off than heat up. Put on multiple medium to thin layers.
- Use synthetic, high tech clothes. If you get wet they will dry faster.
- Stay close to shore. Better safe than sorry if you go over. The shock alone from cold water can cause you to drown. Being able to stand up and get out of the water could save you life.
- Take your camera. It’s always fun to show friends how nutty you are.
When prepared for and done properly winter kayaking is a fantastic experience that should not be missed. If you would like to go out or have questions or concerns, please call me at the shop. I am happy to tell you when, where, what’s out there, or help decipher the weather for you.
Happy Paddling!
John
